Critical Zone Session at Goldschmidt 2023

Stay tuned for this session about the critical zone at Goldschmidt 2023!

Session title: “Dynamics and tracers of biogeochemical processes in the Critical Zone”

Location: Goldschmidt 2023 Conference, in Lyon, France

When: July 9-14, 2023

Keynote speaker: Heather Buss, University of Bristol

Description: Earth’s surface is the crucial intersection of rock, soil, water, air, and living organisms that sustains life. Chemical weathering and physical erosion are among the key Critical Zone processes that redistribute mass and energy, govern ecosystem structure, and stabilize global climate. Characterizing and quantifying these dynamic processes through space and time require a combination of data that include sophisticated tracers and proxies and physically and chemically based models. This session welcomes contributions on the development and application of novel and traditional biogeochemical proxies and modeling approaches, including field and laboratory studies. Of particular interest are interdisciplinary studies that aim to better understand complex relationships between human activity, climate, erosion, weathering, and the hydrological cycle. We invite submissions from researchers of all experience levels and backgrounds, but especially encourage submissions from early career researchers and those from backgrounds typically underrepresented in the Earth Sciences.
