The San Gabriel Mountains site is located northeast of Los Angeles. It is a temperate and fairly wet area, with chaparral at low elevations and pine forests at high elevations, similar to the San Jacinto site. Unlike the San Jacinto site, the San Gabriel site has densely fractured granitic bedrock, and is located within a restraining bend of the San Andreas fault.
