The Pond Branch site, located near Baltimore, Maryland, has a humid-temperate climate, with temperature and precipitation similar to the San Gabriel Mountains site. It is covered with Eastern deciduous forest and underlain by schist. This site is advantageous because of its long history of work linking weathering, saprolite, hydrology, and geomorphology, as well as existing geophysical data.
