My research focuses on the interactions among hydrology, ecosystem biogeochemical cycling, and landscape geophysical properties. This goal of this work is to improve our understanding of how these interacting systems are altered by disturbances, land management practices and climate variability and change. Methodologically my work is based on the development and application of mechanistic models and the use of field monitoring data to parameterize and improve them. I am principal developer of RHESSys a spatially distributed coupled model of hydrology and terrestrial ecosystem carbon and nutrient cycling processes. Current RHESSys application sites include Sierra and Boulder CZO, several LTER sites and other experimental watersheds in Western US and elsewhere.
