Postdoctoral Scholar position at UC Merced with KREW and SSCZO

The University of California, Merced is a dynamic new university campus in Merced, California. The University opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced offers research-centered and student-oriented educational opportunities at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels through three academic schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences/Humanities/Arts.

The Kings River Experimental Watershed (KREW) and the Southern Sierra Critical Zone Observatory (SSCZO) jointly invite applications for a postdoctoral research position. The successful candidate will use and synthesize existing data collected in and around the KREW and the SSCZO to better understand the geophysical, geochemical, hydrological and ecological controls on the development and function of the Critical Zone. The incumbent will also evaluate the effects of prescribed fire, uneven-aged, small-group tree harvesting, and natural disturbance on Critical Zone processes through data synthesis and numerical modeling. This position will be based at UC Merced, with the opportunity to work with KREW and SSCZO investigators at other locations.

Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in Watershed Hydrology or related field; well-developed data analysis and/or modeling skills; and excellent writing, organizational and interpersonal skills.

Preferred: The ideal candidate will have a strong publication record in fields related to Critical Zone science and forest management impacts along with demonstrated experience linking geospatial, remotely sensed and in-situ datasets of water, nutrients, soils, vegetation, geochemistry, geophysics, and meteorology. Experience in geospatial and/or hydrologic modeling is also desired.

Salary is based on the University of California Academic Postdoctoral Scholar Salary scale.
