The first large-scale field campaign for the IML-CZO got underway during the first week of April in the Clear Creek Watershed near Iowa City. The campaign focused on the collection of baseline soil samples, as well as an introduction to common soil sampling and processing procedures.
Art Bettis, University of Iowa professor of earth and environmental sciences, demonstrated infield and post-sediment alluvium coring. Thanos Papanicolaou, professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, demonstrated surface soil sampling along a hillslope transect.
April weather can be unpredictable, so the team has built in extra time to allow for weather delays.
